Cynthia, the following statements and questions are NOT intended to address you alone or specifically - honest. You just provided the spring board for me to leap off of.

I can think of two reasons right off the top of my head.

"When stupidity ceases to be fatal evolution stops."

Additionally, on this list the message behind the message is often the topic of conversation, so in this case I would ask what message is sent to people who in the future take lightly the responsibilities necessary for this type of expedition to be conducted safely if this guy (or guys) are not charged and prosecuted?

Is it: "Personal Responsibility - with ALL the consequences."

Or:

"No big deal, based on history I probably won't even spend the night in jail if a couple of them die."

Wait - before you answer - you are about to load your kids into a canoe and shove them off into open water for a couple of days with this trip planner - now, does that alter your prospective?

Food for thought for ~everyone~ I would think.
